Technology overview

Scaffold Engineering Approach

  • Advances in biomedical engineering have led to a thorough understanding of the body’s own capacity for healing. Following trauma, disease, or aging, the body’s own structural tissue scaffolding can be destroyed, removed, or weakened. Functional restoration of the patient’s own tissue is possible if given the correct impetus—a scaffold that anticipates the defect site’s biological and mechanical requirements and healing capacity.
  • All of Serica’s medical device products are designed to serve as transitory scaffolds intended to provide immediate stabilization to soft connective tissue structures following surgical repair. While supporting the body’s own regenerative processes at the implant site, the transitory nature of Serica’s scaffold products allows for tissue healing and rejuvenation as they are bioresorbed through natural tissue action.
  • Serica’s broad biomaterial product portfolio can be configured to reinforce a variety of tissue defects where weakness or voids exist to obtain desired surgical outcomes. Serica’s specific product designs have been developed to anticipate and support the specific rates of tissue healing in the knee, shoulder, abdomen, breast, neck and face, as well as other sites.

Technology Platforms

Serica’s innovative platforms represent a new class of biomaterials:

The strongest, natural, all protein, long-term bioresorbable biomaterials not derived from mammalian tissue or organs.

Serica’s platforms are differentiated by their unique properties and benefits:

  • Bioresorption rate control
  • Track record of biocompatibility
  • Robust strength and void volume for tissue ingrowth
  • Total product-surgical system integration
Serica’s new, revolutionary biomaterial device platforms:

Seri™, the long-term bioresorbable fiber scaffold. Seri™ is constructed of natural, highly purified silk fibril protein. Remarkably configurable into a variety of product forms, its elegant proprietary design is being studied for effectiveness in delivering superior strength and stability supporting complex joint mechanics. Seri also aims to offer contouring, flexibility and superior smoothness for aesthetic volume filling and soft-tissue repair surgeries.

SeriGel™, the long-term bioresorbable silk hydrogel. SeriGel™, a natural, highly purified silk protein hydrogel, aims to be the advanced solution for void filling and volume creation of superficial to deep dermis sites for a wide range of aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery applications. Beyond serving as a versatile primary scaffold, SeriGel offers tremendous potential in amorphous defect repair, as a device coating and in drug delivery applications.

Serica’s Targeted Foci

Seri and SeriGel technologies are being developed to achieve the critical design criteria essential to addressing major clinical needs in orthopaedics, aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery with a host of other applications:

Orthopaedics
  • Serica is developing a first-of-its-kind solution for Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) repair to re-create a fully functional ACL with complete native mechanical and physiological design characteristics.
  • Serica solutions are being designed to strengthen the tendon-bone attachment site following Rotator Cuff Tendon (RCT) repair decreasing the significant failure rate of current primary repair procedures.
  • Serica’s new research efforts focus on hand, elbow, foot, ankle and knee repair, as well as areas where Serica’s unique solutions can revolutionize tissue repair.
Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery
  • Serica’s cost-effective solutions are being designed to improve the outcome of procedures performed to lift the breast, neck, and face. Serica solutions aim to overcome the shortcomings and side effects of previous alternatives and, as a result, decrease surgery and recovery times while increasing restorative performance.
  • Serica’s first-of-its-kind highly pure injectable, SeriGel—neither derived from animal tissue or organs nor produced synthetically and with no added chemical contaminants—deliver truly enduring effects.
Serica Technology Development and Collaboration
  • Serica is addressing urinary incontinence and pelvic floor prolapse, which afflict millions of women when pregnancy or age makes their collagen fascia support structures and body walls susceptible to stretch and rupture.
  • Serica is pioneering the world’s first completely bioresorbable protein solution not extracted from animal or human skin or organs, for connective tissue repair without erosion and scar formation, particularly for patients who undergo hernia or general body wall repair procedures.
  • In addition to those described above, other opportunities for collaboration abound in cardiovascular, spinal and veterinary medicine.
