Platform Technology Differentiation

Serica has taken full advantage of the unique properties of Seri™ and SeriGel™:

Bioresorption Control
  • The backbone of Serica’s technology platforms is the company’s in-depth understanding of its biomaterials’ behavior in the body.
  • The 100% protein and amino acid composition of Serica’s silk-based products allows them to be naturally bioresorbed by the body during tissue rejuvenation and healing but at slower rates than other common structural proteins such as collagen.
  • As a result, Serica’s know-how has led to the company’s unique ability to predict and control the rate at which its silk-based products transfer load-bearing responsibilities to rejuvenating tissue while being bioresorbed by the body.
  • The “customizable biodegradability” of the Seri and SeriGel biomaterial scaffolds will make them ideal for a wide variety of applications where current materials—both synthetic and natural options—fail to meet unmet needs.
Track Record – Biocompatibility and Safety
  • The core constituent of all of Serica’s products, the fiber of the B. mori silkworm, offers a track record of safety over centuries of humans use.
  • Serica’s silk-based materials eliminate source bioburden risk due to their non-mammalian origin.
  • Serica’s advanced biomaterial technologies have been tested and shown to be biocompatible according to international ISO standards, supporting active remodeling of the implantation site with no evidence of device particulate debris formation.

Extensive biocompatibility testing demonstrates that the Seri biomaterial is biocompatible, bioresorbable, non-cytotoxic, non-toxic, non-pyrogenic, non-mutagenic, non-clastogenic, non-hemolytic, and non-antigenic with no evidence of sensitization, hypersensitivity, or complement activation.

Strength, Void Volume, Tissue Infiltration
  • The superior strength of Serica’s products permits less material in the final scaffold device while still meeting the design requirements of native functional tissue.
  • Serica has mastered scaffold design and physical property control through textile engineering and its in-depth understanding of its silk-based biomaterials.
  • Serica’s product scaffold designs are configured to provide significant void volume in order to support rapid infiltration of the patient’s newly forming tissue into the device during the initial days of healing.
Surgical System Integration
  • Serica aims to lead the development of fully integrated surgical systems which leverage scaffold design flexibility in combination with novel surgical instrumentation and device anchors that secure the scaffolds at the implant site.
  • Results will entail dramatic increases in surgical efficiency, significant decreases in healthcare costs and the ultimate improvement in surgical outcomes for patients.
